img_1611They call this place the “Buddhist Disneyworld”,  Fo Guang Shan is a must see destination for tourist and visitors in Kaohsiung. This place is worth a visit even if you are not a buddhist. It shows the relics and statues of Buddha and is the center of Buddhism belief in Kaohsiung in terms of land area. The place is so huge.
img_1618From the gate you will be entering a mall but temple-like building, inside there are restaurants, coffee shop and souvenir shop. At the exit door walk on further and you will see the big Buddha statue, along with the big pagodas line up the walkways to the statue. It is certainly a long walk, but is definitely worth the effort.img_1668Inside  the buddah building there is a museum that opens at 9AM, there are numerous exhibits about Buddhist artifacts and on the Buddha’s life, and other smaller Buddhist statues. There’s even a 4D cinema screening in the hall itself.img_1694Go early before the busloads of tourists arrive. The scale of this place was massive and unlike anything else we saw, architecturally, in Kaohsiung. It’s a good place for lots of walking and learning about Buddha (if that’s your interest) if not, there is not that much to do here, just see.img_1627

How to get here:
HSR Taipei to HSR Zuoying takes about 1hr 30 mins. There is a E-DA bus right outside the HSR Zuoying Station that departs every ~30 mins that takes you directly to Fo Guang Shan. The bus ride is ~45 mins. If you leave Taipei station at 7.30am, you should arrive before 11am. You have to spend at least halfday so you can explore the whole area. A map is available you can ask the help of the temple officers to stamp the area which you already visited from the map.
